Censorship of episodes released on DVD

Breakthrough may finally solve the Edna Pearson problem!
September 30, 2009
On The Inside
tells us FremantleMedia (who are slowly releasing Prisoner on DVD in
the UK) are finally going to release the Edna Pearson episodes uncut in the
UK, possibly in February 2010. Officially, Australian fans are being denied
these episodes, but we have our ways of buying these DVDs when they come out,
so stay tuned and keep an eye on your OTI mailing list inbox and website for
further news on this long-awaited breakthrough!

A Prisoner fan and Recroom
member reports that the Label Manager for Prisoner at Shock DVD has said
the legal problems concerning the Edna Pearson episodes have only just been
resolved.
"These episode were edited due to legal issues relating to a case that
I believe has only just been resolved. We will be looking into redoing the episodes,
but they are still some time off. In the future we may look at remastering them,
but the quality present is difficult to bring up to DVD quality, as the original
transfer we got access to was pretty shabby anyway.", he was quoted as
saying in the email.
This was in a response to a query about the Spider Simpson
episodes which appear to be confused with the Edna ones.
However, a Shock spokeswoman who has been answering a lot of queries about
various issues recently has said there seems to be little hope that this "injunction"
(which she knows less about than we do) will be scrapped, and so we are stuck
with the mutilated versions on the official DVDs.
More details will be reported as soon as they come to hand.
How the Edna Pearson censor
poisoned the DVD release
Episodes 463 through to 471, which are notorious for having suffered severe
cuts because of Emily Perry back in 1984, did not escape the scissors for this
DVD release as originally hoped. Despite warnings sent to Shock many months
in advance, they still went ahead with authoring the cut versions of these episodes
anyway, knowing fans would be unhappy with these versions, and on top of the
storm of complaints over Episode 83 and the much smaller cuts littered here
and there due to damage caused to the original tapes whilst in storage and in
archiving over the past 20-odd years.
THE STORYLINE
The storyline — which the censors deem unsuitable for release on DVD
— revolves around an old woman by the name of Edna May Pearson. In Episode
463, she is convicted of attempted murder, and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment,
for trying to poison her husband Harry Pearson. She and her husband (who she
tried to poison) work together to appeal against her sentence. All the inmates
believe she is innocent, while the staff in particular prison cook Mrs O'Regan
treat her as though she is guilty. She is banned from the kitchen. All the time
as the women defend her innocence, Edna poisons several of her fellow inmates:
Frances, Alice and Marlene, while they defend her innocence. Edna's appeal succeeds
(468) and just when she is pardoned, she poisons the steak at the barbecue the
women have to celebrate what they think is their last day of having an easy
time of it in prison, before the Freak takes over as Governor. Bobbie cops the
blame and is charged with the poisoning, but is eventually cleared after Meg
finds new evidence which proves Edna is guilty, based on her knowledge about
all the plants in the garden (469). Meanwhile, Rachel succeeds in getting a
warning out that Edna is guilty, and this results in Edna and her husband separating
as reported on the news as seen on TV by the women in the recroom (470). In
Episode 471, even though the storyline had been "concluded" (Edna
never seemed to return to jail and there didn't appear to be a retrial), there
were still edits made in relation to Bobbie being cleared of the poisoning charge
at the VJ's hearing.
This report outlines in detail the damage done to the affected episodes that
were released on DVD as a result of the cuts made because of the "legal
action" that relates to the events in 1984 involving Emily Perry (for more
details on that, click here).
Volume 29, Disc 4 — EPISODE 463
This episode has 3 parts missing.
 |
- Edna Pearson's induction is missing at 29:50, the point
in Episode 463 on the DVDs between the scene where Marie Winter pushes
Judy against the dryers and threatens to cause her pacemaker to fail
and the gate slams, and the return to the laundry where Marlene and
Rachel discuss aerobics and exercising. The missing scene is in reception,
where Joyce Barry makes Edna May Pearson stand on the white line, and
reads the charges out to her — that she has been convicted of
attempted murder, and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. Edna cries,
says she is innocent, and asks why would she want to poison her husband?
- Edna Pearson is introduced to her fellow inmates, in the recroom.
This part is missing from the point in the DVDs at 36:33, between
Marlene Warren talking about a fashion parade, and Marlene back in her
cell admitting to Heather Rodgers to sticking a sign on her back. Winter
is the one who greets Edna "well well, this place is crawling with
TV stars!" as she is led into the recroom by Officer Rodgers. Edna
tells Judy Bryant she is not coping very well.
- Edna talking about her case with the women. Between the scene
where the Freak advises Heather Rodgers not to mix with prisoners on
a "social level" and that she agrees with her saying she is
beginning to look like a clown, and the scene back at Meg's house where
"Tracey"'s boyfriend is counting a wad of cash and Meg says
it must be the proceeds of a robbery and "Tracey" says it
was won at the TAB. The missing part, gone from 38:08, is in
the recroom where Edna explains how her husband (who she allegedly tried
to poison) is defending her innocence, and says her first husband was
chronically ill and poisoned himself to end it all.

(should be 45 minutes and 24 seconds)
Volume 29, Disc 4 — EPISODE 464
This episode has 2 parts missing:
 |
- Part of a scene in the dining room at breakfast, where the women don't
believe Edna looks like a poisoner, and pick another fight with Bobbie.
(missing from the point at 11:15 on the DVD version of Episode
464)
- Gone from the point at 20:14 is a scene of Harry visiting Edna
outside the building. This scene occurs between the scene in the laundry
where Winter heavys Bryant again after a 'stunt' with the Freak, and
before "Tracey" is at the airport booking a flight to Sydney.

Running time: 42 minutes and 34 seconds
(should be 44 minutes and 26 seconds)

Volume 30, Disc 1 — EPISODE 465
The censor is getting busy now, taking out 7 parts from this episode:
 |
- In the dining room at 2:28 between when Judy and Bobbie discuss
Marlene and her mum, and when Winter says to Keane that it seems they
put Marlene off her tucker. The censor considers the part — where
Edna says to Rachel it is not easy in here, and asks her if she is hungry
— unsuitable for Australian eyes.
- We are allowed to see Edna in her cell discussing with Rachel about
how lucky she is to have Harry, and even mentioning the fact that she
was appealing, but the scissors come out at 5:54 after Edna says
Harry will move heaven and earth to make sure her appeal was successful,
before she has a chance to say she was terribly upset when her first
husband died..... What is the appeal about?
- Mrs O'Regan banning Edna from the kitchen because she is in
for poisoning. (another 1 minute and 18 seconds goes missing, at 11:32)
- Edna in the Governor's office complaining about Mrs O'Regan banning
her from the kitchen and denying she has ever poisoned anyone in
her life, then back in the kitchen where Rachel and Marlene seriously
doubt Edna could poison anyone, and can't understand why O'Regan kicked
her out, then Marlene putting on an act of falling ill. The entire scene
of the Governor's office and the kitchen are cut (another 3 minutes
and 9 seconds missing at 12:41)
- In the recroom, the women listening to the transister as Edna's husband
goes on radio appealing against her conviction of his attempted murder
(57 seconds snipped at 20:40)
- Marlene looking at Edna's picture of Harry, and Edna accidentally
saying how gullible Harry is, then in a panic asks Marlene whether she
just heard what she said, before the gateslam at 22:01 (45 seconds
go missing)
- We are allowed only some of the scene of Harry visiting Edna including
Harry commenting on a dangerous plant having delicate flowers, but the
gate slams right on cue at 31:12, just as the music associated
with the banned storyline began to play — like as though the gateslam
was locking that storyline away from us. (1 minute and 16 seconds go
missing). The missing footage is of Edna asking him hesitantly if that
is poisonous.

Volume 30, Disc 2 — EPISODE 469
This is the worst-affected episode, with appalling cuts making it by far the
shortest in the entire series. The butcher couldn't even leave the mugshots
alone, with jumps in the music.

- Marlene in the infirmary, and trying to tell the Governor it was Edna.
Rachel being given a hard time about her licence. Desmond telling the

poisoning them. Missing from 9:26

a prisoner) about getting in touch with Harry. Missing from 14:52

when she was on the phone explaining something about a garden, and Meg
telling the Freak about how Edna knows all about the plants in the garden,

Running time: 33 minutes and 32 seconds
(should be 44 minutes and 45 seconds, give or take a few seconds)
Volume 30, Disc 2 — EPISODE 470
Mr Snippy hasn't finished his job yet — there was a TV news broadcast
the women watched in the recroom that said Edna and her husband have separated
due to "irreconcilable differences". The scene is missing from the
DVDs at 35:07, straight after Judy telling Myra about her daughter's
son being deaf, and before the boy yells for his dog down the drain as the waters
continue to rise. More details.
Running time: 44 minutes and 36 seconds
(should be 45 minutes and 23 seconds)
Volume 30, Disc 2 — EPISODE 471
Cuts to this episode weren't discovered until fairly recently. There were 3
more references to the poisoning case that also didn't escape the scissors.
This episode was released on DVD twice — with the precise amount of footage
missing from both versions even though the gateslams are shorter in the version
on Disc 2 of Volume 30, than in the version contained in the Great Escapes
disc in Box Set 2. There was a separate version of Episode 471 released in the
USA version of Box Set 2, with the poisoning footage untouched, but the gateslams
missing. This seems to suggest that (at least with this episode) it was redone
from the master with the scenes already missing, while an uncut master is with
an overseas affiliate.
Cuts to this episode:
- Part of the discussion in the recroom about the upcoming VJ hearing, where
Bobbie is worried about being accused of poisoning, is missing from 6:15
- Part of Bobbie talking to Marlene about the VJ's hearing, is missing from
9:21
- Part of the VJ's hearing itself is also missing, from 28:53

Running time: 42 minutes and 49 seconds
(should be at most 44 minutes and 11 seconds, but at least a fraction
under 44 whole minutes)
Another detailed report on the butchery to these episodes (when they were shown
on TV) can be found here.
STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS!
These cuts were made due to "legal issues" that for reasons
still unknown still exist 23 years after the case. We are told that the
DVD release has to stay within this undocumented law, we can complain
all we like, and there is no way around this — but there are avenues
we can take to try to remedy this situation and put pressure on them if
we really want these episodes officially released on DVD uncut. We could
demand the full publication of official documentation of the "legal
action" that still requires these episodes to be cut, and depending
on the validity of any such documentation, seek intervention from consumer
affairs watchdogs and the Ombudsman, and in the end have replacements
for the discs mentioned above, with the original, uncut versions
of these episodes included.
